Bridging the Digital Divide: our initiative in Indian correctional facilities

In a world where technology is rapidly advancing, the digital divide continues to grow, leaving behind those who lack access to digital skills and resources. Recognizing this gap, we embarked on a transformative journey in 2014 to bridge the digital divide among incarcerated populations in India, in collaboration with our partner, India Vision Foundation. This initiative has not only equipped people impacted by the justice system with essential digital skills but has also provided them with a sense of hope and a pathway to a better future.

Since the inception of this initiative, we have extended our Digital Unify Program reach to 14 correctional facilities across India. Together with India Vision Foundation we have taken a commendable step towards the rehabilitation of the incarcerated by launching the program. Some of the facilities that have benefited from this program include Tihar Prison in Delhi, Gurgaon Prison in Haryana State, Faridabad Prison in Haryana State, Ambala Prison in Haryana State, Dasna Jail in Uttar Pradesh State, Meerut Prison in Uttar Pradesh state, Bulandshahr Prison in Uttar Pradesh State, and Aligarh Prison in Uttar Pradesh State. These facilities, among others, have become centers of learning and transformation, where the incarcerated are given the opportunity to acquire digital skills that can significantly impact their lives.

To ensure the success of this initiative, we selected and trained 17 dedicated trainers. They play a crucial role in imparting digital knowledge to the incarcerated, guiding them through various courses, and helping them understand the practical applications of these skills. The trainers’ commitment and expertise have been instrumental in the effective implementation of the program.

“Over the past decade, our initiative has touched the lives of more than 12,500 people” says Kamal Deep Jain, our Country Manager for India. “These beneficiaries have gained valuable digital skills that can help them reintegrate into society, find employment opportunities, and lead more fulfilling lives. The program has not only provided them with technical knowledge but has also instilled a sense of self-worth and confidence”.

The key achievements of the initiative include skill development, where individuals involved in the criminal justice system have learned essential digital skills, including basic computer operations, internet usage, and software applications. Many have found employment opportunities upon their release, reducing the likelihood of recidivism. The program has also fostered personal growth and development, helping them build a positive outlook on life.

The success of the prison initiative has inspired us to explore new avenues and expand our reach to more correctional facilities across India, which we hope will happen in 2025.
