After “the Training the Trainers program: STM32 Starter Kit coding course” in July, an exciting initiative aimed at empowering youth through technology, we designed a 20-hour program for a target group aged 12 to 16 years, with the objective of supporting ST’s sustainability strategy, which emphasizes community support and education. This program was conducted for the students of underserved communities in slums with one of our NGO partner site, Navjyoti India Foundation, in Delhi.
Bridging the digital divide
Our primary goal is to tackle digital education poverty by providing hands-on coding experience to underprivileged youth. Through the development and deployment of this new course on STM32 microcontrollers, we aim to ignite creativity and enhance critical thinking skills. We believe that equipping young minds with the knowledge of practical technology applications can help them address real-world problems.
A successful pilot batch
The first pilot batch comprised of 18 enthusiastic students from a local NGO partner, all of whom had previously completed our basic computer course. This foundational knowledge set the stage for their coding journey. The sessions were led by a dedicated group of trainers, many of whom were ST volunteers, including Parul Mehndiratta, Seema Rani, Ajay Soam, Anand Mishra, Sakshi, Vagarth, and Bhavesh. Their commitment and expertise played a crucial role in creating an engaging learning environment.
Learning through hands-on experience
The curriculum included essential concepts in block and MicroPython coding, alongside practical sessions involving STM32L4 microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators. The hands-on practice allowed students to translate theoretical knowledge into real-life applications, enhancing their overall learning experience.
One of the most exciting aspects of the course was the opportunity for students to conceptualize and develop their own projects. On the final day, they presented their creations, showcasing the knowledge and skills they had acquired throughout the program.
One standout project was particularly addressing the community challenge: a system designed to ‘detect drain overflow’ during the rainy season. Utilizing a moisture sensor, this project alerts users with a buzzer and blinking red light when water levels rise dangerously high, helping families take timely action to protect their homes from flooding. This project not only demonstrated their technical skills but also highlighted their ability to identify and address pressing issues in their community.
Looking ahead
The positive feedback from the students reinforced our belief in the power of technological education. They not only enjoyed the learning process but also gained invaluable insights into how coding can serve as a tool for change. As we look to the future, we are excited about the potential to expand this initiative and reach more young learners.
In conclusion, the STM32 Starter Kit coding course has been a meaningful step towards empowering youth and addressing the challenges of digital education poverty. By fostering creativity and critical thinking, we are helping to cultivate a new generation of problem solvers equipped to face the challenges of tomorrow. Together, we can build a brighter future for these young minds and their communities.
Testimony from one of our volunteer trainers, Parul Mehndiratta:
“The unique selling point of the program is its emphasis on learning by doing. I was surprised by the participants’ grasp and enthusiasm for learning.
This experience has truly opened my eyes to the real benefits of diverse thinking. The innovative minds I encountered came up with unique use cases that I had never considered before.
Their resilience and creativity have not only inspired me but also broadened my perspective.
I am grateful for this experience and look forward to continuing this journey of learning and growth together.”
Testimonial from Neetu Sharma Joshi, Director- Navjyoti India Foundation:
“The introduction of coding classes with hands-on kits by the ST Foundation has been a much-needed initiative. For the past two years, Navjyoti has been conducting coding classes for children, but they were primarily virtual and lacked the use of practical kits, resulting in a limited impact.
This pilot program has been a tremendously welcome step, and we are deeply grateful to STMicroelectronics Foundation (India) for selecting Navjyoti to undertake this initiative.
The pilot proved to be an invaluable learning experience, not only for our children but also for us as an organization. It provided us with insights and strategies to significantly enhance our impact. The course design, the trainer’s dedication, and the engaging classroom interactions with the children are particularly commendable.
We once again extend our heartfelt gratitude to the STMicroelectronics Foundation and look forward to scaling this initiative to benefit many more children.”
